MMTVC RECEIVES YAW-K RECOGNITION AWARD

The principal receives a commemorative stone from President Don Lovisa, Durham College, given to the Maasai Mara TVC for its commitment to the young Africa Works-Kenya project. Young Africa Works a strategy by the MasterCard Foundation aims to enable 30 million young people to access dignified and fulfilling work by 2030. Young Africa works-Kenya: Youth Employability Through TVET(Technical and vocational Education and training) project is a partnership between colleges and Institutes Canada, the MasterCard Foundation, the Kenyan Ministry of Education and the private sector. The project focuses on strengthening the quality and relevance of TVET institutions and systems in Kenya for the key economic growth sectors identified under the Big four agenda (manufacturing, Universal healthcare, food security, affordable housing) and digital sectors. The project fosters partnerships between Kenyan and Canadian institutions to develop TVET Centers of Excellence that will increase the participation of youth, particularly women in market relevant skills training programs to ultimately increase the number of youth in dignified and fulfilling work. A particular focus of the Young Africa Works-Kenya TVET project includes competency based curriculum development, pre-service and in-service training of trainers, prior learning assessment and recognition, delivery of life skills and establishing work placements for trainees. The project also addresses the need for safe learning spaces to increase the participation of youth, specifically young women in training that leads to employment. Commitment to the project has seen MMTVC mount 6 CBET courses in partnership with College and institutes Canada (College of the North Atlantic, Durham College, Georgian College and College of the Rockies). The courses are; 1. Tour Guide Level 5 2. Solar PV Installation Level 3 3. Solar PV Installation Level (Standalone) 4 4. Electrical Installation Level 3 5. Electrical Installation Level 4 6. Electrical Installation Level 5 The project has put the college in a Global map and opened a world of opportunities for the trainees who graduate from the college.

MMTVC MARKS NATIONAL TREE PLANTING DAY

In response to the HE the President call to plant trees, MMTVC staff and stakeholders celebrated the National Tree planting Day on November 13, 2023 by planting trees at the College premises. The exercise sought to aid the President’s objectives and also set the stage for achieving the Greening TVET theme in the institution. The ceremony was graced by the Principal who while addressing the MMTVC community, echoed the President’s sentiments on the crucial role of the initiative in preserving the environment for future generations. “This tree planting exercise here today is a step towards restoring our environment and to ensure we keep getting rains that is key to enhanced agricultural outputs. It is also an essential step in achieving sustainable development as part of the Greening TVET theme”, stated the principal during his address. He went ahead to encourage all members to plant a minimum of 35 trees which sought to help the President’s objective of planting 15 Billion trees by 2032. In a remarkable feat, MMTVC community members demonstrated their commitment to the cause by planting an impressive 1000 trees ensuring the target for the day was achieved. This collective effort underscores the collaborative spirit required to achieve ambitious conservation goals and protect the vital ecosystem. In conclusion, the principal outlined plans to purchase 1000 more seedlings to be planted within the school farm and premises.

AJIRA DIGITAL TRAINING: DIGITAL SKILLS FOR DIGITAL WORK

The office of the Dean of students, career services and ICT department partnered with the ministry of Information, Communications and Technology through the Ajira Digital program to train students on digital skills. The Ajira Digital aimed to introduce trainees to digitally enabled jobs and provide the tools, training and mentorship needed to earn income from digital work. The one week training program encompassed both theoretical concepts and technical training with over 500 trainees creating Ajira accounts. The Ajira Digital Program is a Government initiative driven by the Ministry of ICT to empower over one million young people to access digital job opportunities. The program was developed in 2018 to deal with the high unemployment rate in Kenya. The program seeks to position Kenya as a labor destination for multinational companies as well encourage local companies and the public sector to create digital work and thereby bridging the gap between skills demand and lack of jobs. The end goal is to catapult Kenya onto the Global map, recognized as a freelance hub. Its guiding principles are private sector first (value generation through the private sector), sustainability (orchestration of the ecosystem to self-regulate and grow organically), eliminate brokers (generation of more value to the citizen) and promote the domestic economy. The training involves offering the bidding skills to ensure participants get the best jobs, ensuring the participants learn how identify jobs that match their skills to avoid performing poorly, Experienced workers receiving training programs to equip them with risk-taking and leadership skills to help the advance in their online careers and financial education to help online workers in the prudent management of their finances. Over 500 students underwent training in Data entry, content writing and transcription skills and are part of the MMTVC Ajira Digital Club. A total of 430 students are actively working on online projects on the remote task and upwork platforms.

ONGOING KSTVET CBET TRAINING

Maasai mara Technical and vocational college is currently holding a two weeks CBET training program at its college grounds. The training aims to help improve the implementation of CBET curriculum among technical institutions

DIRECTOR TVET DR. MESHACK CHUMA OPWORA CLOSES TWO WEEK CBET DELIVERY METHODOLOGIES TRAINING

Maasai Mara TVC was honored to have hosted the Director TVET Dr Meshack Chuma Opwora who was the chief guest for the graduation ceremony of the CBET delivery methodologies training. In partnership with CICan through the Young Africa Works in Kenya-TVET MasterCard foundation, Maasai Mara TVC hosted members from the Kenya School of TVET for a 2-week CBET delivery training aimed at retooling TVET trainers to boost implementation of CBET in Kenyan Institutions. The state department for TVET PS in a circular earlier in the year had directed that all admissions in TVET institutions across the country commencing from September 2023 intake be for CBET based courses. The State Department for TVET PS further added that the implementation of CBET in Kenya is a presidential directive. The PS Dr. Muoria called on all the TVET agencies; TVET CDACC, TVETA, KNQA, Kenya School of TVET and all the stakeholders in the TVET sub-sector to play their facilitative role in ensuring that there is a smooth CBET curriculum in Kenya. The PS further noted that there is a huge need to ensure that TVET trainers have requisite practical skills adding that this is fundamental in the implementation of CBET because trainers will have an opportunity to be skilled on the use of the state-of-the-art equipment. During his visit, The Director Dr Meshack reiterated the PS sentiments and extended his appreciation to facilitators from KSTVET for the good job they are undertaking. He expressed confidence in KSTVET in achievement of the retooling objective meant to be conducted in all TVET institutions nationwide. He noted that 1400 trainers drawn from National polytechnics and other institutions in different regions have undergone retooling and many more to follow in the coming year. He also appreciated the collaborative effort with CICan in YAW-K and Maasai Mara TVC for being a prominent participant in the program. He noted that the CBET delivery methodologies training represents an ongoing commitment in in-service training of trainers as the training marks cohort 2 phase 2 of the program. “CBET is the way forward and we will not be going back. The future of CBET is here”, he said. The director who was accompanied by ILO, SD TVET Dr Mary Koigi also put emphasis on the dual training program which ensures that trainees spend time in the industry whilst also studying to enhance industry alignment and practical training. He directed that the institution ensures the program is actualized and running smoothly to ensure seamless transitioning of trainees from the college to the industry environment where they can have a big impact. The director called on the principal to enter into collaborations with various industries in order to enable the smooth implementation of CBET.
